Catching up on the Mini-Adventures

There are times when I feel like this at work!

Gwen has had a bunch of mini-adventures in the past week or so!  I’ll try to get through as many as possible in as short amount of space.  It would be so much easier if I just kept up on her stories but alas I have been very busy lately.  I hope to keep up better in the future and have tons more photos to share!

The Bank — I took Gwen to the bank to deposit a check I had.  We pulled up and I was going to go in but then I found a deposit slip in my bag so I wrote it out with the dog jumping all over the place and whining since she thought she was getting out.  We drove up to the window and I rolled mine down and guess who decided she needed to try to crawl out the window.  Yup, you guessed it.  I held onto her collar and the lady didn’t even have any dog cookies to give her!  She said they’d run out…liiiikely story….

The Groomers — I scheduled an appointment for Gwen but it happened to be during when I worked but Andrew had the day off so he brought her.  Luckily he got there when we weren’t too busy so I was able to pet Gwen and talk to him for a few minutes and then get the dog checked in.  We got her the shedless treatment (@Petco) and I highly recommend it for anyone with a Corgi!  I know I raved about the last spa treatment that she had (I loved the smell) but this definitely beats it.  Plus I didn’t like this month’s special spa shampoo smell.  When they got done with her you could definitely see a difference!  They brush them out with the Furminator and get out a lot of the undercoat (what is perpetually shedding) and they use a special shampoo that helps with it too.  When I asked one of my groomer friends about the shedless treatments, she said that they recommend it and do a lot of the shedless treatments with the Corgis.  Also, it is currently 20% off with your Petco PalsRewards card right now, just sayin. 😉  This deal is running March 3-23, book an appointment today!

Anywho, I got a little distracted there.  Gwen was in the kennels waiting her turn to be bathed and I went back there to get the broom so I could sweep after cleaning the small animal cages and Gwen saw/smelled me.  When I went out to sweep up the remainder of the mess I’d made cleaning I heard her start to bark, yip, whine, and howl.  I felt so bad!  I knew right away it was her, she has a pretty distinctive sound, or maybe that is just that I recognize it since we are in the same “pack?”  Either way I felt horrible so when I went back to put the broom back I went to say hi to her.  She had airplane ears and looked at me so pathetically that it made me sad! 😦  I tried to avoid having to go back into grooming as much as possible after that.  The only times I have to go back there are when I have to let the groomers know someone is there to drop-off/pick-up an animal when they are in the back by the tubs.

Gwennie did very well and was very happy to see us when we came to get her.  They let me go back and get her when I got there (since I am an employee after all) and she didn’t want to get out of her cage!  She ended up scratching my neck and chest cause she was too scared to come out nicely.  What a little dodo brain.  She also had to go to the bathroom reeeeeally bad when we left and didn’t even make it to the grass/dirt but she did make it right outside and past the sidewalk!  I was so glad she didn’t pee somewhere where I had to clean it up!  We went home and gave her a Frosty Paw for being a good pup for the groomers! 🙂

EDIT:  I forgot to mention, she got a little brain freeze from her Frosty Paw!  She kept rubbing her face and making funny noises when she was eating it!

Being “that” customer — I always try to not be “that” customer.  I think we all know which one “that” one is.  I rarely ever complain at a store or restaurant.  I never ask for extra discounts (asking for a military discount doesn’t count in this case) or ho-hum about my coupons.  If I have a coupon then I have it in hand when I’m waiting in line!  There is a crate pad that I’d seen before that I really liked, the only problem was that Petco did not sell it.  I’d seen it at a store that was a bit of a hike to get to so I started to look at other places.  Turns out Petsmart sold it.  So on one of Andrew’s days off we went to Petsmart.  I also had a gift card that I’d found in my gift card hoard that I’d found in my desk when I cleaned all my stuff out of my parents’ house.  I though I’d checked the card online but it turned out there wasn’t any money on it at all.  Of course I thought it had money on it so I tried to use it and the poor cashier had to call their manager over while I insisted it did actually have money on it!  I tried to use one of those Visa Gift Cards that I also had but it only had a dollar on it so I had to pay the rest of it. The sad part of my story is, I know how that cashier felt trying to be nice to me while thinking I was stupid for insisting I had money when I didn’t.  Good thing they didn’t know me there!

If only Petco had sold it!  This is the Kong Durable Crate Pad that we bought.  They didn’t have the exact size of Gwen’s crate but we got the 30” one and it fits remarkably well for being “too big” for her crate.  I have seen good reviews and bad reviews.  Most of the bad ones I think come from people who want to blame others for their dogs’ destructo nature.  Nothing is indestructible!  I so want to tell that to people who ask me “will this hold up against my dog?” or “is this really as indestructible as they say?”  So far so good with little destructo Corgi. *knock on wood!*

I also had a “that” customer moment at Michael’s the other day.  I tried to use a coupon on my phone and my phone failed me.  After like two minutes of trying to get it to come up I just gave up and paid full price.  I didn’t want to hold up the line, unlike so many unprepared people in this world.  But you didn’t hear that from me!

Navy Life.  Status:  Moving. — Yes, Andrew got Orders (I think I may have mentioned this before?) and we will be moving very soon.  We do NOT know when we are leaving OR where we are living.  Great, huh?  Yeah, it is throwing a wrench in the whole “let’s prepare to move” thing.  We will be moving back to Washington State (we do know which base and to which boat he is assigned).  Another cross country trip! Yay…  I am dreading this drive since we will be moving with a dog and two hamsters.  We were going to try to sell my truck before we left but it doesn’t look like that is going to happen since how do you expect to fit 2 people, 3 animals, a dog crate and hamster cage, all our guns and ammo, and our bags into a Dodge Challenger??  So we have to keep my truck even though it is going to be so uncomfortable to drive and my be another nail in its coffin (it already did the xc trip once this past summer).  We are hoping that since it is Spring and not +100* Summer weather that it will be a little nicer on my poor little baby truck.

Soccer Dog — I’ve got a couple stories from playing soccer with Gwen but I am going to go ahead and save those for another day since I’ve already let this post drone on and on.

Baby Ferrets! — One  last thing before you go!  I heard there were baby ferrets up at a petstore about a half hour away so I begged Andrew to take me to go see them.  They were so dang cute!!!  They were only 7 weeks old!  I got a picture but it was a little blurry, here is what a 7 week old baby ferret looks like:

They are like a third of the size of the adults and their little faces are even cuter!  This is the picture I took:

Adding to the Menagerie

I have tried to write this post about twelve times but it never got off the ground since things kept popping up!  I am not quite sure where to start with this!  I suppose the beginning is probably the best.  Forgive me if this gets longwinded, I just have so much I want to say!

On Friday, Andrew and I both had the day off.  So I made an appointment to have Gwen groomed.  She was getting pretty stinky, especially after he last trip to the dog park…so much mud!  Miss Gwen went to the groomer and we decided to splurge a little and get her the special which included a teeth brushing and this fancy pants shampoo and conditioner that smelled like honey and almonds. (Honey and Almond Milk Bath Spa Works was what they called it at the store.  It’s a seasonal thing.) About twenty bucks extra but it was SO worth it!!!  She smelled like Heaven when we got her back!   You could be six feet away and still smell her!  Oh my goodness it was so good!  Of course we took her to where I work so I am going to have to find out if you can purchase that shampoo!  I will let you know the brand once I find out! 😉

We have been talking about getting a couple of hamsters for a little while now.  Roborovski Hamsters (aka Robo Hamsters) to be exact!  They are a type of dwarf hamster, the smallest of the hamsters, and native to Mongolia.  They are social little creatures, only about the size of a ping pong ball, and very cute!  They are quick and supposed to be a little difficult to handle because of their size.  When we dropped Gwen off to be groomed, I showed Andrew the hamsters.  Once he saw them he finally agreed that yes we would be getting a couple at some point!

Since Gwen was going to be at the spa for a few hours we headed up to the range to go shoot.  Our intentions had been to shoot rifle and maybe a little pistol but the local PD was using the rifle range for something so we only got to shoot pistol.  Andrew got dart board targets for Christmas so we played a round of Cricket (I think that’s what we played) and I beat him!  It was fun!  We shot our own pistols so he got a slight handicap of having to shoot at the next farther line since the middle line would’ve been too easy for him with the 9mm.  I shot my .22 which would have sucked at the far line, so we were pretty even except for the fact that I stomped, stomped, stomped him!

We headed home to wait for the call telling us Gwen was done.  On our way home we went to the Petco by our house just to look at hamster stuff.  We saw the little Robo there but didn’t buy anything except an exercise wheel since the place where I work didn’t have the kind/color that I wanted.  At that point we had decided that we would be buying the basics for our hamsters!  We talked about them in the car and we were leaning towards getting them that day/weekend.  When we got to Petco to pick up the dog we got a cart and started to get the things we needed.  We got the dog, got the stuff, got the dog a Moozle (beef snouth chew treat) and a Kong piggy because I felt bad that we weren’t getting her anything.  I had also fully intended to use our two $5 off ($10 total!) coupons on this purchase but of course some lady distracted me by asking about Gwen so that didn’t happen.  I did remember to ask for my employee discount which helped!  AND we used a gift card that had almost $100 on it so that made it super nice and way less expensive! 🙂

The Moozle (beef snout) and the Kong Piggy that we got for Gwen. We love Kong products! They are so durable!

Got home, realized the tank we’d gotten was too big for where we were going to put it.  So we loaded that back up and headed back to the store! Another two 20 minute drives.  Got the right size tank for us for even cheaper since we got an aquarium instead of terrarium — it’s $1 per gallon aquariums w/ petco pals cards right now!  So we got some money back!  How nice.  Did I mention that we purchased our two little Robos on our first trip?  Yup.  We purchased two robos but basically put them on hold since we wanted to get everything set up first.  So they put a sign on the cage saying that they were purchased and going home with me on Saturday!

That night we gave Gwen the Moozle while we were setting up the new hamster cage.  My intention was to only let her have half and then take it away since it was a big treat.  That plan back fired.  She ate the whole thing before I realized it!  So of course that night she had a belly ache.  Turns out the Moozles are just a bit too rich for Gwen…without being too nasty, her upset tummy continued the next day…so she had to have another bath after her grooming and was on a diet of rice and chicken broth for a couple days.  Also, she could clear a room better than Pumba.  Oh lordy, it REAKED!

Saturday we had plans to go to a dog show (Doin’ the Charleston) sans Gwen and then later to go to the range so Andrew could donate blood and get another 3 month membership.  I checked the schedule and saw that Pembrokes were to show at 9:15am on Saturday!  So we got there about 9:00, found the ring and watched the dogs there.  Another breed that was to show in that ring before the Pems was the Sweedish Vallhund.  This dog is related to the Corgi and looks like a corgified wolf.  So cute!  We talked to a lady who had three that she was showing and she turned out to be the only breeder in GA of these dogs.  She imported some of her dogs from Europe and has her own breeding program.  This breed is still a bit rare in the States.  We talked to her, got her business card, and met her male puppy that she had waiting in her car.  She brought him back in when she brought us back a card.  We watched the Pems while we waited.  Oh they were so pretty!  (Mostly females being shown the other day).  We talked to one Pem lady who had a puppy that it was her first show, that little pup was so dainty looking compared to Gwen!

Andrew and I both loved the little Sweedish Vallhunds and we both thought it was neat that we could actually see some at the show and talk to the lady about them!  We had heard about them before and said how neat it would be to one day have one of those.  I am still partial to the Pembroke Welsh Corgi of course but we both think that one day a little Sweedish Vallhund could join our family.  Gwen would probably love to have a playmate but would hate to share her things!  At least they would be the same size.

Moving right along now.  After the show and donating blood, we headed home to play with the dog for a bit before we went to pick up our new additions to our little family and my our menagerie.  We picked up some things we had forgotten the day before, like food, and also picked up our new little hammies!  Saturdays are always quite busy so the associate on register asked if I wanted to get the hamsters myself, since I do work there too.  I told her sure I’d get them!  I felt weird since I was in normal clothes but I even saw one of the managers while I was getting them and he didn’t care, he just said hi.

So now we have two hamsters! 😀  Their names are Boris and Visili.  Boris is the smaller one and Visili is Andrew’s and just so happens to be the fat one.  We picked the names since they are Russian.  I like Boris because it means “small” and Andrew liked Visili because of Vasily Zaytsev the Russian sniper of the Battle of Stalingrad fame (Enemy at the Gates).  Also, Visili means “king.”

Boris

Boris (L) and Visili (R)

Sunday I worked and when I came home, I had been expecting to either go somewhere with Andrew and Gwen or maybe head back to the dog show to watch some of the afternoon stuff but I came home to find the husband sick.  He had flu like symptoms that were accompanied by this horrible cough which of course lasted through the night.  Should’ve taken him to the ER that night but we waited until the morning, he went to sick call instead of work and they told him that he has an upper respiratory infection and that “everything was normal and that he sounded fine.”  They should have seen how not fine he was about an hour before we got there!  He had trouble breathing.  Last night was better but he ended up sleeping on the couch so he could sit up.  He went to work and we (his parents and I) are hoping that they send him to the doctor/hospital when they see how horrible he looks and sounds.  But this is the Navy we are talking about…their “doctors” aren’t known for being good or efficient…when he went in he wasn’t even seen by a real doctor.  He was seen by a corpsman which is like a nurse but I don’t think they are as well trained…I am pretty sure a nurse would NOT have told him what they told him and a nurse would most likely have had a doctor see him!  Argh!  I won’t see him until after I’m done at work today so I hope he gets through the day fine…

While the husband was sick with the flu I was nice and bought him a plethora of different chicken soup varieties, saltine crackers, some Gatorade, and Ginger Ale.  The next day after he went to see the “docs” he wanted desperately to go to work even though they had told him rest and lots of fluids.  I wouldn’t let him go.  Good think I drove him to the base and he didn’t drive himself or he may have ended up at work instead of being a vegetable on the couch all day!  I made him go put pjs back on and go to sleep on the couch.  I brought him tall glasses of liquids and told him to drink and then go to sleep.  Just call me nurse Ratchet!

**We will be back to regular Gwen adventures soon!  I have some picture posts planned for the near future!  A picture says a thousand words, right? 😉

Adventures in Chuck Town

Friday was full of adventure!  Gwen got to go to the doggy salon!  I took her to the Petsmart Grooming so she could get a bath and brush.  I know I can give her a bath just fine but sometimes it is nice to pawn off your little yellow devil on some other poor unsuspecting soul just so that you can get a nice clean dog and a devil free afternoon!  Also, I had a coupon. 🙂

Made her appointment on Thursday and got her in on Friday!  I didn’t even get lost going to Petsmart on my own! (Normally I don’t venture that direction sans husband.)  I asked the lady how much she said it would be and she said for a puppy it would be $10.99, so I thought “cool! this will be way cheaper than I thought!”  I took little Gwyndolyn in and the lady checked her in and was asking what I wanted done and I just said a bath and brush and she asked me if I wanted her to be bathed with the special oatmeal shampoo and a conditioner used on her coat.  She said it would cost $16.  I thought what the heck, pamper my dog!  It is after all only about five bucks more! . . . famous last words!  What I didn’t realize she was saying that it was $16 EXTRA! (Selective hearing?)  I missed that part.

Oh well. I didn’t find out that it was extra until I went to pick her up.  But I am getting ahead of myself here!

So the lady said it would take about 3 hours and I’d get a call when Gwen was done.  So I headed over to the mall to kill some time.  I went to JC Pennys and looked around, not really intending on buying anything.  I ended up buying a dress and some earrings.  Then I walked through the mall, found some more earrings, bought a birthday card at Hallmark, and then decided I needed to leave the mall before I spent too much money.  As it were, I am quite happy with my purchases.  I don’t spend much money on myself as of late anyways (spend it all on dog toys…) so I justified it quite easily.  I decided to try to head to this store downtown that I have been wanting to check out.

Got in the car, punched in the address on the GPS and headed out.  Went through an area that I’d never been to before after going through the area where there are all the car dealerships!  And I mean all the FANCY dealers too!  Like Maserati, Land Rover, Jaguar, Porsche, Lexus, BMW, Smart Car, and then of course the normal ones like Dodge, Ford, Chevy, Honda.  Andrew had taken me down there before just to show me the fancy cars when I came to visit.  Where I am from we don’t have a ton of fancy cars around.  There is a resident Aston Martin on the Island that you see every once in awhile but for the most part you don’t see many.  And of course things like muscle and sports cars only come out on nice days back home.  Here, they are EVERYWHERE!  I have seen more Corvettes and Challangers around (as well as others) town in a week than I normally see driving around WA all summer!  I think it has something to do with the weather.

Crossed a draw bridge, and found the shop I wanted to visit!  The only problem was finding parking.  So I drove around and had to double back, turned, got lost, figured out where I was, didn’t want to park in a parking garage cause they’re creepy alone, and got lost again.  Ended up parking in a lot that I wasn’t supposed to just so I could punch in the Petsmart address to get back.  I never got out of my car and never made it to that little shop. 😦  My GPS didn’t like being in the buildings so I stuck it in my phone’s GPS and that picked it up right away.  So I drove back with 2 GPS things directing me!  The funny thing was that they were both telling me to go different ways and they didn’t tell me the directions at the same time and my GPS was a little off.  It is a little old/out dated but it still gets me where I want to go.  I haven’t the desire to get a new one since then I’d have multiples.  I’d much rather just pay to update it (I know that isn’t as economical).

Drove over another draw bridge!! (I think draw bridges are cool!)  Got pissed off at drivers not letting me over to exit.  In the end I ended up where I wanted to go.  I found two thrift stores I plan on dragging Andrew to with me and a BBQ place that I want to try.  One of the thrift stores, the proceeds benefit the animal shelter.  There is a thrift store like that back home where all the proceeds benefit the animal shelter.  I think that’s a nice way to raise money for the animals. 🙂  Plus, I have some stuff I can donate!

Got back to Petsmart, milled around a bit then decided to go back to check and see if Gwen was done.  As I was walking back, the lady called me!  I was like okay, I’ll be right there!  I don’t think she understood I meant I would literally be right there!

Got Gwen, was told it would be $26.  That was when I realized it would be $16 EXTRA…  but I had a coupon for $5 off a bath so it kind of evened out in the end.  Gwen ended up with a nice clean and fluffy coat and I didn’t have to get soaking wet lift a finger!  Took Gwen outside and she peed like a racehorse in the bushes.  Put her in the car and she went right to sleep!  Well, she barked in my ear once but slept until we got home!  She never sleeps in the car!  Gwenie curled up on the couch and went to sleep until dinner time, ate and then went back to sleep.  She slept until Andrew came home!  Going to the doggy salon must be quite stressful!

Petsmart gives you a “Pawgress Report” that tells all about their visit.  I think it’s quite a nice touch!  It lets you know how they were and what they had done.  Gwen got washed with super duper extra spercial oatmeal shampoo & conditioner! And then she got brushed and her nails done (even though I said she didn’t need them done since I’d just done them) and her ears cleaned (they really needed cleaning), and her TEETH BRUSHED! With chicken flavored toothpaste.  I feel sorry for her, but Andrew had been wanting to brush her teeth — I’d always said that was silly.  I mean we never brushed Dayzee’s teeth… “yeah and look how that turned out for you, her breath stinks!”

All in all, Gwen got a THOROUGH day at the spa!  I even made her a nice little festive bandana for her!  This time it has candy on it in honor of Halloween!  Her butt is so fluffy now too!

BUT WAIT! THERE’S MORE!  Not more about Gwen’s trip to the “salon” but our weekend, thus far.  Yesterday, I went to a volunteer orientation at one of the local horse rescues.  This one is smaller and newer but they of course still need volunteer help.  So I am going to try to volunteer there a couple times a week to get my horse fix and be a productive member of society.  I missed the last orientation because I got lost (of course).  It was so nice to be back in jeans and boots again!  And I got to spend most of my morning petting horses and giving treats!  While I did that, Andrew went to the grand reopening of a gun shop where our dog trainer works at.  Andrew ordered a new rifle while he was there too.  If you would like to make a donation to his gun buying fund, please, by all means, feel free to do so!  Our agreement is that if he buys this one then I get to get another animal once we move.   While he was there, he won a prize and entered to win a shotgun that they were raffling off.  He dragged me back later so I could get a raffle ticket and to see if he’d won it.  Sadly, he did not.  Some man who was missing his bottom teeth did….

Today we don’t know what we are going to do.  I think Gwen wants to go outside to play with her stick though!  She has been dragging this same stick around for almost a week.  We make her drop it at the door with the shoes outside and she clamps down on that thing and refuses to give it up.  In the end she never wins.

I realized yesterday I haven’t taken as many pictures lately.  Shame on me, I know.  We got ANOTHER costume for 50% off the other day, so that will mean more pictures!  Also, I am hoping to post a leeetle more regularly that way I don’t end up with gargantuan posts like these….I have soooooooo much to tell but not enough time space attention span necessary to get all my thoughts out at once.
